Joseph Dennin has developed impressive credentials in the area of international trade and investment law, advising U.S. and foreign clients, including foreign governments and trade associations, on market access questions and trade and investment policy matters. He is widely recognized as one of the leading authorities on the regulation of foreign investment in defense and high technology industries and the application of national security controls. In addition, Joe has developed extensive knowledge of laws and regulations governing U.S. exports, including export control restrictions, FCPA, anti-boycott regulations and the use of overseas marketing representatives. His practice includes representation of clients seeking counsel with respect to more effective dealings with the Executive and Legislative Branches.
Joe frequently works with corporations to design and implement internal programs that can ensure compliance with U.S trade and customs regulations. He also handles corporate and personal immigration matters, has represented a number of universities in connection with government grants and contracts, and counsels clients and manages litigation involving Custom's Country of Origin Rules, the Buy America Act and WTO procurement provisions.
In addition to his years of private practice, Joe has had a distinguished government career. He served as Assistant Secretary of Commerce for International Economic Policy from 1984 to 1986. He also served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Africa, the Near East and South Asia; Deputy Assistant Secretary for Finance, Investment and Services; Deputy Associate Attorney General; Director of Operations for the U.S. International Trade Commission; Staff Assistant to the President and Counsel to the Intelligence Oversight Board of the White House; and Counsel to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Joe currently serves as a member of the NAFTA Chapter 19 Binational Disputes Resolution Panel.
A frequent lecturer and author on international trade and investment topics, he is the General Editor of Law and Practice of the World Trade Organization and a member of the Board of Advisors of WorldTrade Executive, Inc.'s, North American Free Trade and Investment Report. He also serves on the Board of Directors and is an officer of the US-Taiwan Business Council.
