Craig Dowdy is a partner in the Public Policy and Regulatory Affairs section of the firm and is the head of the energy practice group. His practice focuses on state and federal public utility law, energy, telecommunications and campaign and election law. His work includes strategic counseling and commercial and regulatory litigation for corporate clients. Craig has represented utilities, large end-use customers, long distance companies, competitive local exchange carriers, and resellers in matters before state regulatory agencies, the FERC, and the courts. He has represented clients in matters involving mergers and acquisitions; electric energy supply agreements; natural gas supply contracts; electric, natural gas, and telecommunications certificates, tariffs, and rulemakings; electric generation and natural gas capacity supply proceedings; electric and natural gas integrated resource planning; energy trading and asset management; manufactured gas plant clean-ups; pipeline replacement programs; deregulation and unbundling; power plant projects and acquisitions; and major rate case litigation. In addition, Craig’s practice includes commercial litigation and public policy representation. He has previously held several technical marketing positions in Power Systems with Westinghouse. He served as manager of business and product planning responsible for strategic planning, product development and marketing communications when he left Westinghouse Power Systems to practice law.
Craig is listed in The Best Lawyers in America and has been listed as one of the Best Lawyers in Atlanta by Atlanta Magazine. He also is listed as one of “ America’s Leading Business Lawyers” by Chambers & Partners. In 2006 and 2007, Craig was recognized as a "Georgia Super Lawyer" by Law and Politics.
Craig received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Auburn University and earned his law degree from Georgia State University College of Law where he was a member of the 1988 National Moot Court championship team.
Craig was appointed by Governor Sonny Perdue as a Board Member to the Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority State Board where he serves as Vice Chairman of the Board and Chairman of the Infrastructure Committee. Craig is the past Endowment Board Chairman and the current Senior Warden of the Vestry of St. Peter and St. Paul Episcopal Church. Craig is a member of the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Chamber Governmental Affairs Council. He has served in leadership capacities for the Cobb County Republican Party and the Georgia State Republican Party. Craig has also served in leadership capacities on numerous campaign committees, including serving as Cobb County Co-Chairman and member of the Georgia Steering Committee and Finance Committee for the 2000 George W. Bush for President Campaign. Craig also served as part of the 2000 George W. Bush Recount Team in West Palm Beach, Florida. In addition, he has served as Chairman, Counsel, and Treasurer for Congressman Bob Barr’s campaign committees. Craig is a graduate of the late US Senator Paul Coverdell’s Leadership Institute.
