Washington Program Delivers the Goods on China

June 29, 2005

Thirty-four corporate counsel, executives, business development officers and regulatory experts from pesticide and chemical companies throughout the United States attended the firm's China and Pesticides: New Markets, New Sources briefing last Thursday in the Washington, DC office. The seminar's featured speaker was Mr. Ye Jiming, Deputy Director of the Institute for Control of Agrochemicals - Ministry of Agriculture in Beijing.

The world pesticide trade with China is large and growing. In 2004, China imported $150 million and exported $1.2 billion in pesticides. This export figure is 63% higher than the prior year, reflecting a fast-growing trade.

Together, MLA and MTD Ventures LLC, a China consulting affiliate, assist companies in marketing pesticides in China and sourcing pesticide products from China. In addition to regulatory issues, the program featured information on advertising, IP protection, trade and tariff issues, business contracts, and setting up joint ventures and subsidiaries in China.

Other speakers included Mr. Zhao Baoqing from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Washington, DC, who spoke on US-China agricultural trade, and Dr. Francisca Liem of the Environmental Protection Agency. Program attendees included Mr. Renrong Cai of the China Chamber of International Commerce, Chinese representatives of the firm's client SC Johnson, and other EPA officials.

Firm speakers included John Conner, Jeffrey Li, Chuck Wilson and Brett Harris. Speakers from the firm's regulatory and scientific consulting affiliate included Robert Stewart and David Brookman.
