Governor's aide to join law firm

Richard Costigan, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's deputy chief of staff and liaison to the Legislature, is leaving the administration to join the Sacramento office of a law firm, the firm announced Wednesday.

On Dec. 4, Costigan will become a managing director in the government affairs practice of McKenna Long & Aldridge. The firm, which has offices nationwide, will be opening a Sacramento branch.

The firm's Web site indicates that it helps its corporate clients win government contracts, navigate government regulations and obtain government-issued permits, among other things.

Costigan, who is legally barred from lobbying the Governor's Office for a year after he leaves, could not be reached for comment.

Margita Thompson, a spokeswoman for the governor, said there is no replacement yet for Costigan, who has served in the administration since Schwarzenegger took office in 2003.

"He has served tirelessly and with the highest level of integrity," Schwarzenegger said in a statement. "I wish him the best."
