Canada key to U.S. energy

The bureaucratic elite in Washington, D.C., now realize Canada is the key to American energy security, says Calgary's recently appointed U.S. consul general.

"When it comes to security of energy supplies in the future, I can just say three words -- Canada, Canada, Canada," said Tom Huffaker.

Huffaker said while he was stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa between 1999-2003 he and the two ambassadors -- Gordon Giffin and Paul Cellucci -- repeatedly tried to arouse Washington to the danger of reliance on unstable supplies of energy. The message never seemed to get through, but Huffaker said it has now.

Huffaker also tried to calm fears new passport or other identification processes would tie up trade.

He said the new identification processes are actually expected to speed up passage between countries.
