Luis Aguilar to speak at 12th Annual Georgia Tech Global Business Forum

April 5, 2006

This year the Georgia Tech Global Business Forum turns itsfocus to the member nations of the U.S.-Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement (DRCAFTA): Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The DR-CAFTA agreement eliminates virtually all tariff barriers in a $33 billion trade market. Countless new business opportunities will arise from this agreement.

According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, America already exports $15.7 billion in products to Central America and the Dominican Republic – more than the United States sells to India, Indonesia, and Russia combined. While 80 percent of Central American and Dominican products have entered the U.S. market duty free, U.S. exports to the DR-CAFTA countries have faced substantial tariffs. President Bush signed the proclamation to begin implementing DR-CAFTA February 28.

Atlanta is home to honorary or full consulates for all the nations which are members of DR-CAFTA as well as many firms doing extensive business in those countries.
