The Los Angeles office has practitioners with a wide variety of substantive practice area experience. The three largest departments in the office are Government Contracts, Real Estate and Litigation. In addition, the office has significant experience in General Corporate Counseling (including taxation, SEC, bankruptcy and corporate restructuring), Finance, Environmental Compliance, Employment Law, and White Collar Crime. Attorneys in each of these practice areas handle virtually every type of contract, litigation or counseling problem. Clients include numerous Fortune 500 firms, mid-size companies, major government contractors and non-profit organizations of all types. The firm also offers civil business litigation and white collar criminal defense efforts, as well as international dispute resolution in the Middle East, Europe, Canada, and Japan.
The Government Contracts practice in Los Angeles, which is part of the largest of its kind in the country, concentrates in prosecuting and defending complex contract litigation with the U.S. and foreign governments in the electronics, aerospace and computer fields. Matters run the gamut in size and geography. Los Angeles attorneys have taken the lead in litigations involving "nine-figure" claims for damages. These cases involved sophisticated electronic and software intensive air defense systems designed and built in the Middle East by two of the largest aerospace and electronics companies in the world under a foreign military sales contract, as well as similarly sized claims under domestic defense contracts for the development of major weapons systems.
Litigation
The Litigation practice in Los Angeles handles a wide variety of complex business matters in addition to its involvement in the Government Contract cases. Litigators in MLA's LA office practice in the areas of complex breach of contract litigation, class action suits, anti-trust, and banking law. In support of the Government Contracts practice, the Litigation Practice has developed one of the most respected federal criminal and civil fraud defense practices in Los Angeles. MLA's Los Angeles litigators, coupled with an experienced team of white collar crime litigators in MLA’s San Diego Office, are well-known for their experience in the defense of civil false claims under the federal statute permitting individuals to file whistleblower litigation in concert with or on behalf of the Department of Justice. Several of these cases have involved claims in excess of $100 million asserted against a variety of clients including: a major European multi-national corporation; major defense contractors; and an international service company that manages the U.S. Embassy facility in Tokyo over the theft of the embassy's oil supplies. In addition to these high profile cases, the office also handles fraud allegations at the state and local government levels.
Product Liability and Toxic Tort
MLA's Product Liability and Toxic Tort practitioners combine their experience in complex civil litigation with the firm's experience in the technical and medical issues that often form the battleground for these cases. MLA's attorneys have extensive experience with scientific and medical issues that enables them to integrate complex issues to present a credible scientific defense for each company. These types of cases frequently are won through discovery. When these cases are not defeated by pre-trial motions, MLA attorneys are skilled at presenting complex scientific evidence to lay juries with excellent results.
MLA's Los Angeles attorneys represent companies in traditional product liability and mass tort litigation alleging design, manufacturing and warning issues. The firm defends automobile manufacturers, automobile parts suppliers and industrial equipment suppliers in litigation in numerous jurisdictions. The firm also defends manufacturers in many of the current classes of mass torts, including asbestos litigation, silica litigation, benzene litigation, “fen-phen” litigation, industrial and agricultural chemical exposure litigation, latex glove litigation, PPA litigation and cell phone radiation litigation. MLA is pleased to have served as local, regional and national counsel in these actions.
One unique aspect of the firm’s practice is the defense of government contractors in toxic tort and product liability cases. MLA attorneys are particularly familiar with the special legal defenses available in such actions, including under the recently enacted Safety Act, which provides particular rights and defenses to manufacturers of homeland security products.
Real Estate
MLA attorneys have multi-disciplinary experience handling all aspects of real estate development, investment and finance. They close many deals for borrowers and lenders, developers and owners, corporations and tenants. MLA attorneys represent lenders, servicers and borrowers in loan transactions ranging from simple secured real estate loans to large, complex financing facilities with revolving features and multiple branches of debt, mezzanine loans, loan assumptions and defeasance transactions. They also handle ground-up predevelopment planning, acquisitions and financing, development and subdivision, construction and leasing transactions. At the other end of the spectrum, MLA attorneys handle complex bankruptcy and restructuring/buyout deals for the firm's real estate and other clients.
